We announced it on Facebook, but also wanted to be sure we let EVERYONE know that this coming Saturday, February 11th, we will have an all day crop, and the world famous KELLY JO will be in the HOUSE!

Now, she may see this and say . . . "World famous? What were they thinking? " But she is totally famous in our world!

Also in the house will be the new Jenni Bowlin Punches, and Kelly Jo will be working some serious punch magic with these new punches.

The crop is 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and we would love to see you there. There are still spaces left, so call the store to sign up. Kelly Jo will be arriving around 1:00 p.m., so if you can't crop and still want to come see all the great things these punches can do, stop by in the afternoon.

We've Tied a String to our Finger

As you may have noticed, we took a bit of a break from our blog. And then we got used to the fact that we took a break from our blog. And then we kind of forgot about our blog.

Hmmm . . . do we let it go or do we revive it? Well, here I am writing, and there is the answer.

There are times where we just get busy and forget about things . . . not because they're not important, but because other things get in the way. That clearly happens with paper crafting as well. Life gets busy, and we take breaks. Since January there have been so many customers coming in saying that they had taken a break and are just coming back to the hobby. It has been great to see some of our old friends back in the store.

So for that reason alone . . . it's the revival of the blog and the promise that we will tie a string around our finger to remember to keep you updated on what's happening.

So what is happening?

As I write this entry, there are a number of crafty ladies cropping at The Summit in Simsbury, and there is a smaller group cropping at the store in Canton. Indeed there is a whole lot of craftiness going on!

What's new in the store for February? Well, for product we have some new LYB in a few weeks ago which has been selling steadily. Can you say "Paradise?" Just check out these gorgeous colors . . .

We have two fabulous new Authentique lines that have come in this past week. Genuine and Celebrate . . . which are FABulous! Celebrate is just perfect for birthday or any celebration.

We have updated our class corner and have so many exciting projects in the works. Where do I begin?

First and foremost, we will continue our "Kit of the Month" and have a new design posted in the store for February.

We have a new monthly series of classes . . . "Tools of the Trade" which we just started this past Thursday. This month's tool was the Cricut, and the class was taught by the crafty Peg Bruno. What we will be doing is featuring a different tool or product each month and you'll leave with creations using that tool. Stay tuned to find out what March has to offer for this series. Do you have a particular tool you would like to learn more about? If so, please leave us a comment and let us know.

Also new . . . our Creations a la Carte sessions. Details are still in the works, but I'll give you a quick overview. There will be several projects offered "a la carte" and you will call to sign up for the session, indicating which project you would like to create. We will create the kit for you, and you will come at the designated day/time with your own tools and adhesive to create that item. Each item will be priced separately, and there will be groups working on the different projects with an instructor on hand to assist and answer questions. There will be an instruction sheet. This is self-paced, so you'll work at your own pace . . . and just create, no pressure. Projects will come and go from month to month, depending on supply/demand. We will offer layouts, cards, home decor projects, etc. Our first session is this coming Sunday (that's one week from today). We will have two sessions a month . . . one weekday and one weekend.

Stop in the store to see the projects for this month . . . here is a sneak peak of one of them . . . a home decor project that I call "Creative Block." We also have a Disney chipboard album which is displayed at the store and would be fabulous to showcase your favorite photos from your last trip or an upcoming trip.

We're just getting this project off the ground, so it's a bit of a work in progress.

Our Scrapbooking 101 class is on the calendar for February 16th! If you know anyone new to this hobby, or someone who might be interested, let them know about this class. This class will be free for "newbies." Call the store to sign up and for details.

Another new monthly series . . . Sketches! Each month a new instructor will offer this class. It will be a sketch class . . . you will be given product to create the sketches provided. We will also have "Solutions" available so you can see how you can apply these very same sketches using other coordinating product. This month's class features the Authentique paper line for the class itself. The class is being offered on Saturday, February 18th.

Our Disney Series with Diane Roule continues to be very popular. This month's class will be Sunday, February 26th. Diane's pages are MAGICAL for your Disney memories.

As always, we have our Friday Midnighters, Saturday Not Quite Midnighters, CROPATHONS and Coffee Crops on the calendar. Check the schedule each month and call to reserve your space.

I think I've covered just about everything . . . and I have indeed tied that stringer on my finger as a reminder to stop back in soon with new updates.

July is nearly here! And with it will come a new company kit, some awesome classes, and some new product.

First, a sneak peek of the July Company Kit, which is truly awesome and has a great array of colors. There is loads of cardstock and pattern paper, and the embellishments are fabulous (from the chipboard to the ribbon).

The smash books arrived and moved rather quickly. We have a few left in stock with a promise of more to come. Be sure to check them out . . .

And also new on the shelf . . . We 'R Memories new collection . . . perfect for any four-legged furry animal. It is adorable!

And we have a great sketch class coming up on July 9th! We highly recommend that you stop in and see the sample layouts. You'll do two layouts in class, and you'll have enough pattern paper to complete at least one more (just add some cardstock). It's a great way to get some summer layouts done.

Is it summer you're looking for? Something a little beachy or poolside? Is it patriotic? A little red . . . a little white . . . a little blue? Or are you looking for something a little bit on the wild side?

We have all three . . . new Bo Bunny is in and on the shelf. Three beautiful new lines . . . Zoology, Liberty, and Barefoot. Each one has fabulous paper and embellishments to match. And there is even a pre-covered chipboard album which is absolutely adorable (it will look like your slaved for hours).

And . . . if sketches scare you a bit . . . take our Sketch Magic class which is coming up on July 9th (rescheduled). There will be a few sketches in class (we've heard there are three layout sketches to choose from) and you'll work to create at least two layouts in class, but will have enough pattern paper so that with just a few more sheets of cardstock you can create more. Rumor has it, there may even be a card sketch or two.

June is just a few short days away and we have been working hard to put some classes on the calendar and coordinate product for our June Kit of the Month and the June edition of "The Company Kit." Here is a just a little sneak preview of what's in store for "The Company Kit."

It's a little step card . . . cute and full of summer, right? There will be a few more sneak peeks of "The Company Kit" below, but first, we want to showcase some of the great classes on the calendar in June. Let's start with Cheryl Mezzetti making another visit to NESC! Cheryl Mezzetti will be in the house! Cheryl taught a great class with us back in January . . . and it was FABULOUS! She is a wonderfully creative instructor. We have a few seats left for her great class, "Inspire Me Altered Canvas Creation" which is being held on Sunday, June 5th at noon. If you're interested, call us to hold your spot.

New to scrapbooking? We have our Scrapbooking 101 class on Thursday, June 9th in the evening. It is a great class for those just starting out with scrapbooking.

Are you interested in delving into sketches and seeing one of the many ways you can make them work? Debbie will be teaching a Sketch Magic class . . . you'll be given some pattern paper, cardstock, ribbon and stickers. You'll have access to some die cuts if you want to use them. Then you decide where and how to put it together using sketches that she will provide in class. And when all is said and done . . . she'll show you what she does with all of her scraps! We have some great new product we'll be using for this class, which will be held on Sunday, June 19th, at 1:00 p.m.

The last Sunday of the month we will again have Diane Roule in the house for her Disney Series. Diane will be delivering her June layout to the store soon, so stop to see what she has in store for us.

The Kit of the Month will not disappoint. It is just perfect for berry picking season and should be ready in the next day or two. It is super cute and full of color (stop in to see the layout in person).

Spring All Around

My goodness . . . it has been quite a while since we have blogged at New England Scrapbook Co. Between Summits and Bus Tours . . . ordering and stocking the shelves with lots of new product, we have just been swamped.

Here it is the last day of April, and Spring is all around us. The flowers are blooming outside, the leaves are just starting to pop onto all the trees, the grass is turning green all around us. And inside . . . we've got new Spring product all around us. A customer recently commented that our new product is very feminine . . . but in reality, it's just that everything is very Spring-like! Tis the season! So what's new in the store . . .

LYB's new baby collections are in . . . Babysaurus and Little Princess! Talk about adorable. It doesn't disappoint. Great colors and so much fun!

Our May Kit of the Month is about to hit the floor . . . made with product from Glitz Laced with Grace . . . great rose print in beautiful hues of red and green.

Valentine's Day Classes...With You In Mind!

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. We've got two very special classes coming this week that you won't want to miss!

Join us on Saturday, January 29th from 10am to 1pm for a hand's on Valentines cookie decorating class in which you will learn the basics of the outline and flood method of cookie decoration.

         *Students will learn techniques like polka-dotting, feathering, and secondary decoration.

         *Cookies and prepared icing, as well as decorating sugars, non-pareils and special Valentines candies will be provided.

         *Each participant will take home their drying creations in a decorated tin.

Announcing The LYB Challenge Winners!

Since this was the last blog challenge, we wanted to do it up big. Little Yellow Bicycle was so generous in their prize-giving. Sadly, we only had two ladies participate in our challenge. But, Lori & Helene did an AMAZING job on their projects:

Helene created this BEAUTIFUL tissuse box with the "Christmas Delight" line. The red polka-dot ribbon & bow is the perfect touch. Wouldn't this look great on your desk or in your bathroom?

Lori created two Halloween layouts using the new Halloween line from LYB. The dimensional stickers and embellishments really make these layouts pop! Great job Lori.

Both of these ladies have such creative talent, and we are so happy they took the time to participate. So, to congratulate them both, they EACH will be receiving an LYB prize pack, complete with a LYB tee-shirt AND an LYB bag. Way to go ladies!!!! Happy scrapping!

Holiday Card Class

The sample cards for the November 20th Holiday Card Class are in the store. There are five designs for a total of ten cards (you will make two of each design). There will be an additional card on class day, so those who attend will make a total of twelve cards! In addition to making the cards, you'll have the sketches to apply to future cards. We'll share some great card making tips as well.

The October Challenge - Our Final Challenge for 2010

Thanks to all our scrappers who took the time to make cards for our last challenge: Operation Write Home. We received some beautiful cards, all hand-crafted for our soldiers overseas. Debbie will stamp all of the back so the cards this weekend, and we will be sending our cards to the agency that sends them directly to our soldiers. On behalf of everyone, thanks to all those who participated! Your work is greatly appreciated!

Now, onto our last challenge for 2010. (Yes, this will be the last challenge for this year. As we head into the holiday season, we will switch gears to get your creative juices flowing.)

It's challenge time!

This month's challenge is an opportunity for all of us to share our creativity with others. The challenge . . . to create greeting cards which will be donated to Operation Write Home . . .

. . . an organization whose mission is to support our nation’s armed forces by sending blank greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them. What began in 2007 with a few cards made by some friends on a message board has become an effort by thousands of card makers. The cards are mailed to a volunteer shipper, where they are sorted and prepared for shipment.

There are three guidelines that we must adhere to . . . and let me be the first to say that the last one is really going to be a challenge for me!

1 - No store bought cards - hand crafted only. There are many reasons why OWH doesn't accept store bought cards, but by far the biggest reason is that our heroes prefer and have come to expect the quality of a handcrafted card. A large battalion was sent two large boxes of cards, one handcrafted and the other store bought. The store bought cards were never used. So . . . handmade cards only!

2 - Use A2 (4 1/4" x 5 1/2") sized cards only. OWH tries to be as efficient as possible when packing the boxes, and sticking to the A2 size means they can send more cards for their shipping dollar in each box. And of course, this means we can ship more to their shippers in one box (win, win for all). As far as our heroes are concerned, the more cards that get into a box, the more families at home get to hear from their loved ones! This size can be achieved simply by using a piece of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock cut in half and folded.

3 - No glitter can be used on the cards. This is a tough one for me, but the reasoning behind it makes it much less painful. As crafters, we know that the glitter gets EVERYWHERE! The tiniest flake of glitter on their uniforms or skin can put them at risk, making them visible to night vision goggles. They are also in primitive conditions for extended periods without showers, so getting rid of the glitter could take a while. For that reason, we ask that you use no glitter at all, unless it is absolutely, positive "baked" into the paper. No flaking at all!

A few more details:

You can list your own information on the back of the card if you'd like (name, town, etc), but leave room for us to put an "Operation Write Home" stamp on the back of each card. This is how the families receiving the cards know where the small works of art came from.

Please include envelopes for your card donations if you have them (not required).

Finally, we want to be sure we do everything we can to keep cards out of the "card hospital." The OWH shippers each have a "Card Hospital" where cards in need of help rest until the shipper has time for triage. That may be a while, so if you 'd like to be sure your cards end up on shipping shelves quickly and not in quarantine, here's a checklist:

- No glitter. Stickles sometimes don't stick - if sparkle comes off, they can't send it.
- Dark card bases without liners. Our soldiers need to be able to write inside with a regular pen, so line any dark cards on the inside with white.
- Orphan embellishments. Buttons, ribbons, alphabet stickers, papers, and other pieces that aren't glued down well can fall off and need to be reattached. They regularly find bits of cards lying around and have no idea where they came from! OWH cards go through a lot of shipping and aren't treated with kid gloves, so be sure they're stable. Use adhesive!
- Inappropriate themes. Remember that our heroes are grown adults sending cards home; we want to stick with standard themes (see below).
- Special note: Be sparing with thick embellishments which have a tendency to grab onto another card and s yank at whatever paper it comes in contact with. They have a really hard time surviving the postal system. You also want to make sure that adhesive is completely beneath your button or ribbon and none sticks out.

THEMES . . . Our goal is to provide a selection that will be snapped up by everyone in the unit pretty quickly. OWH also has deadlines for holidays, depending on the time of year. We will miss the deadlines for Halloween and Thanksgiving, so we want to stay away from those if we can. The most popular cards:

- General Cards - both masculine and feminine
- Love or Miss You cards
- Birthday
- Christmas or Hanukah cards
- We can also focus on cards for other holidays, which they will store and send as that holiday approaches: Valentine's Day, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving.

So, that's the challenge. Bring your cards in . . . NESC will stamp the backs with an OWH stamp (which we have secured from one of the OWH Shippers for our project) and we will collect them from now until October 15th when we will ship them to an official OWH Shipper to sort and send on to our deployed military troops.

Will there be a winner this month? Yes . . . we all win because we'll have that giving spirit (I feel it already).

I've started us all off with three card designs below . . . the first using the new LYB Christmas Delight product, the second using some Jillibean Soup paper . . . and the third using scraps from my bin and a holiday stamp that I colored with markers.

August Challenge

The summer has just been crazy, so we're a bit behind this month with getting the challenge out. For anyone reading this for the first time, our challenge is an opportunity for everyone to get a page done in any theme they desire using product of their choice. We post a sketch and a list of a few assignments. From there, our customers take their trimmers and adhesive and run with it.

The positives of the challenge . . . we all get inspiration from each other and we all get a page done.

I was challenged this month by being on vacation, and it was a long car ride. Let me rephrase that . . . it was a looooooooong car ride. So I had the opportunity to think of a few things that my layout would accomplish. During the drive I was going through receipts in my wallet . . . two from quilt shops, several from three Disney parks visited, and four from scrapbook stores I visited. I perused the list of items on the receipt and the prices listed and I realized. I spend all this money . . . I collect, but often don't put my collections to good use. I wanted to be sure to incorporate the use of some old with some new. So, here goes:

1) I collect ribbon scraps from my projects. We buy a yard of ribbon, and we use 28 inches. If you're like me, you can't throw away a scrap. I have small jars that I save my ribbon scraps in by color. How often do I use the ribbon in the jars? Well, less often than I add scraps of ribbon to the jars. So . . . use some scrap ribbon from an old project. Use one scrap. Use two scraps. Use three! The amount you use is up to you. And if you don't have scrap ribbon, that's fine.

2) Use a paper and matching embellishment . . . so much to choose from. I went for new stuff on this. I simply could not resist the Kaisercraft paper and embellishments. The brown, pink and green papers and the felt birds just sang to me. Heaven! So any paper company that has a matching embellishment! Where do you start?

3) Use a rubber or acrylic stamp in your collection to create anything . . . title, border, etc. I have many, many stamps in my collection and it's embarassing how little use they get. As I sat in my front seat on the drive home, my purchased scrapbook items tucked in plastic in my suitcase on the roof of my car . . . I stressed about stamps in my collection. I had two or three stamps on the roof making the journey home. I was perusing a catalog on stamps in the car. Are you kidding? Why buy more when you have a collection at home. Use them! And so I did. I created a border using one tiny little musical note stamp. I created a title using a border stamp and phrase stamp. And if you don't use a lot of stamps, check out the great acrylic stamps that come with many of the paper lines in the store. The WeRMemory acrylics are a fabulous value and can be used for scrapbooking, cards, you name it. They are great for titles. I'm in love with those little guys!

4) Include a tag somewhere on your layout. It doesn't matter where . . . doesn't matter the size. Any tag, anywhere for any purpose.

5) Finally, include some big brads . . . the large American Crafts brads work perfect.

You're on your own for everything else. Be creative. Your title can go anywhere!

Project Ideas of the Week

I LOVE LOVE LOVE when I ask the girls to create projects using the newest products. They never cease to amaze me with their talent. Debbie Fitz continues her creativity with the new lines from Reminisce:

The rich pinks & purples in the "Bubbly" line are perfect for your little girl photos. Debbie added glittered Thickers" to create her title.

But the "Bubbly" line isn't for girls alone! Look at the "Bathtime" layout she created for her son:

She really got creative with this layout. She painted glossed Bazzill cardstock to let the "bubbles" stand out at the top of the layout and added plenty of detail with her Thickers title, circle punches and black and white outlining. Both of these layouts are displayed in the store, so be sure to check them out when you stop in. Wonderful job Debbie Fitz!

To celebrate her upcoming trip to see the Mouse, Debbie B. created this fantastic photo tray from 7 Gypsies:

This project is just amazing. Maybe Princesses are more your thing. How about creating a tray full of Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel or Tink? Or Pooh Bear? The possibilities are endless! And these trays are available in both black & white. Great job Debbie!

Are You Ready For The Next Blog Challenge??

Happy Humidity!

I loved the layouts from June. The use of color was absolutely awesome (it must be my love of green).

Summer is full swing, and I have to admit that the heat and humidity has gone to my head. It definitely has impacted our challenge this month, as I dropped our list of five items down to four. My brain couldn't handle five items, and it sent a message to my scrapping hands that said . . . "It's summer. Keep it simple." My hands listened and stopped at four. The four items are simple.

1) Punch a border somewhere on your page.
2) Use decorative scissors.
3) Layer two pattern papers.
4) Tuck your journaling block behind a photo.

We all have punches and scissors that are hanging in our stash that we've not used. I wanted to find a way to incorporate those tools in our layout this month. Now don't panic if you threw out your decorative scissors when they "went out." Feel free to tear or punch instead. And if you don't have a border punch, just use any punch to make a border.

On the layering of the pattern papers, you can layer them in any spot. Just be sure that you layer two papers that coordinate with each other. I layered a darker pattern green (Pebbles' Tree House Collection Paper - Adventure) over a lighter floral from the same collection - Bliss.

On tucking the journaling, just tack the edges of any one photo, and tuck your journaling behind your photo or photo mat.

The sketch is a very simple one. If you're looking for an easy way to get a layout done, this sketch will get the job done. I hope that we have many of you this month that will give the sketch a try.

While it doesn't include photos, the idea is that the photos rise from above the border as shown in my example below. I truly wished that I had vertical photos, but I tend to shoot everything horizontally. (Something I need to put on my "to do" list to improve upon when taking photos).

I really love the fun Tree House Collection papers from Pebbles. I had picked them out to compliment the "Fido" remarks stickers from American Crafts. It was interesting, because I could tell they went together, but there was something missing. I determined it was the blue in the stickers that was missing from the papers, so I brought some cardstock in to match the blue and it all came together. The photo doesn't do justice to the layout. Stop in to take a look. It's fun to explore different colors.

I'm looking forward to seeing your layouts. Just make it fun!

I saw the entries, and they were awesome! I am always amazed by how each individual's pictures, style and technique are portrayed each month. For me personally, last month was a great opportunity to be able to participate in the challenge by making a page to display on the wall. While my entry isn't judged, I still get a page done, and I really enjoyed the experience. So you will be seeing another guest instructor soon.

So here is the sketch for June . . .

And here are the five items for your page:

   1) Include some bright green on your page. For me, summer is all about greenery. The grass which was dull is now a bright, vibrant green. The leaves, the plants, the flowers . . . summer is all about green. And while Kermit the Frog sings that "it's not easy being green," I promise that using green on your pages is a breeze. I used the Granny Smith stitch paper by We R Memory Keepers. The stitching adds a new dimension of fun to your page.

   2) Include something with dots on it. It can be any color of dots. They can be large dots or small dots. It can be embossed dots or flat dots. It can be dots on cardstock or pattern paper dots. It can even be dotted ribbon or stamped dots. Just something on your page with dots. I used Bo Bunny dot paper, just a one inch border at the bottom of the page. Benefit of the Bo Bonny dot paper is that it has a coordinating side that is perfect for photo mats (coordinating colors made easy).

   3) Use a Jolee product . . . any Jolee product . . . on the page. I used the "Friend on the Leaf" lady bug Jolee. There are so many Jolee's that we've bought and stashed away. Instructions: 1) Dust off package; 2) Open; 3) Adhere to page!   And if you can't find one in your stash that meets your photo needs, we always have a great supply to choose from.

   4) Our sketch shows photos that are tilted. Put your own twist on the sketch by tilting your photos or journal blocks however you would like. Just be sure to tilt at least one item on your page.

   5) Use a quote or poem on your page. I used a lady bug poem by Marie Lawrence on my page, and I included a portion of her poem as my title. Just a hint . . . sometimes the best page titles come from poetry or quotes which, when incorporated with your page, makes it all come together. Don't stress about this one. Make it simple. You may have song lyrics that work for a page. You may want to do a sports page and can quote the definition of "winning spirit" on your page. No stress . . . if you get stuck on this one item . . . you can take a pass on it and turn your entry in without it.

NESC Kids Summer Scrappin’ Series!!

May Challenge

Hi there Scrappers! This is Debbie Fitzgerald, and I'm bringing you this month's challenge.

I think it's safe to say spring is finally here! The birds are chirping, the trees are green, and the sun's been shining. This was my inspiration for my layout.

So my challenge for you is to use the following sketch to create a 2 page layout with these items...

Something green
Something with wings (bird, butterfly, a bat even?)
Some sort of plant (tree, flower, leaf)
Something chipboard
A shaped (die cut paper)

I used a Jenni Bowlin die cut paper (The white with blue border), but you could use any shaped paper/cardstock. (round, scalloped, etc. ) Or create your own!

I used a Maya Road chipboard tree for my chipboard element. I painted the bark and covered the "leaf" part with patterned paper.

My winged item is the bird sitting in the tree.

I stamped clouds for my embellishments at the top of the page, but you could use any type of embellishment.

I hope that you'll be inspired and play along with this challenge. Don't forget to bring your completed layouts to the store so we can admire your work and enter you into the voting.

Creativity Explodes at ATC Camp

Our third ATC Camp was held at NESC today, and the creativity was overflowing. The theme of this month's camp was "A is for Animals" . . . and we had some great cards with all sorts of multi-legged creatures. A sampling of this months cards, which were traded by camp attendees after class, are noted below.

Next month's theme is "B is for BINGO!" Can't wait to see the creativity.

Woohoo! We don't know about you, but boy, we are POOPED OUT from yesterday's Bus Tour! Did you have fun? We sure hope so! We sure did! Vannesa took pics from each of the bus groups and posted them throughout the day on our Facebook page. You can catch up on all the day's events by looking here.

In other news, we have a few spots open for Peg's "Mommy & Me" class this Wednesday at 9am. This is great for all you Moms & kids who have this week off for spring break.

Moms: drop the kids off with Peg, let them take the class and you can go grab a cup of coffee at Panera or stay and crop to work on you own projects.

And then join us on Thursday, April 22nd at 6:30 for Debbie's Monthly Memories class. We still have a few spots available.

April Challenge

I've not yet heard the news on who our winner was for this past month, but can I just tell you how great the layouts were. I absolutely love the myriad of ways that folks are incorporating their own style with the sketch and the five challenge elements. It really has been a lot of fun, and I'm hoping that one of our other Design Team Members will do the challenge one month so I can be on the other side of the challenge. I know it would be a lot of fun for me, as I just love having an opportunity to get a layout done for my own scrapbooks.

But in the meantime, I must challenge! I tried to think this month about the items that I have in my stash that I don't always use and a few thoughts came to mind.

Pattern paper! When I first got into scrapbooking, if there was a pattern paper that I found, I always bought two sheets. In later years, I noticed that I rarely use two sheets. I usually will mix and match pattern paper. So I switched over to only buying one sheet (unless double-sided). Confession: Every so often I come across a pattern paper that just knocks my socks off. I have to buy two sheets, and sometimes I love it so much I will buy three or four. I'm not sure why I do this, because it sits in my stash and I spend more time "ooohing and ahhhing" over it than anything else. And then I hoard it looking for the perfect project. So . . . I decided this month to really showcase one of those papers that I absolutely bought because I LOVED IT! To really showcase it, I wanted to sprawl it across my page. So that became the first challenge that I wanted to give myself. To use two sheets on a layout and have it sprawl across my page. I then designed my sketch around this particular idea.

O.K. I know it's Spring and flowers are blooming all over the place, but my scrap room is loaded with them! Thankfully the flowers in my crop room do not cause me to sneeze or set off my asthma. They are, however, an item in my stash that I buy a lot of, but don't always use. So I wanted to make sure that I found a way to incorporate some of my stash of flowers in the challenge layout. I just didn't realize how many I had until I started looking. I could open my own florist shop (with some added wire and some bling).

One of my very favorite backgrounds for a layout is white. It gives a clean, crisp look to a layout. For some reason, maybe because it's Spring, I feel I need that clean look to my page. So that was the next challenge I have to myself.

Now for one of my favorite items . . . Thickers! I have lots of dies to make letters, but I still love to use Thickers on my layouts. Have you used them? They are awesome and come in so many different textures, fonts and colors. They're not as flat as a die cut letter made from cardstock, so they add some dimension to your page, and I usually can get a few layouts out of them if I am not alphabetically challenged on a given day. Hopefully no one has had the opportunity to watch me with a set of used Thickers trying to figure out what I can spell with my leftover letters. It's like a game for me!

And finally, replace one letter in your title with a flower. Incorporate any flower that goes along with either your letters or the flowers you used on your page. Just find the right one, and slip a flower in it's place. A little hint . . . this works best for vowels.

So that is the five . . .

Use Thickers for your title
Swap a vowel out of your title and use a flower in it's place

Here is the sketch , followed by my design.

Some of the items I used on my page . . . well, first the paper that I fell in love with. "Best Creation - Mr. and Mrs." The papers are a combination of black, shades of gray, yellow and white. It's in the wedding section, but I used it for a graduation layout. That's why it always pays to look in every section of the store for paper. I might not need wedding or travel paper, but you find some neat papers that are universal while looking around. Let's face it . . . I NEEDED this embossed paper and am so glad I used it on this challenge.

I also tried a new item . . . some of you may have purchased some of the great little "dew drops" here at the store. A little bottle goes a long, long way. I used them to embellish my ribbon which also served to hold my ribbon down, as I used glue dots and this particular ribbon was sheer. I used them for some of my flower centers as well.

And a new tactic I tried tonight . . . there were some flowers in my stash that were left over from a project. They are the large, sheer flowers that you see in the photo. They came with clear jewels for the centers . . . but look closely and my centers are yellow. I actually used alcohol ink to change them from clear to yellow so they would match my paper. Alcohol ink is my new "try it out" item. I hope to incorporate this into some projects down the road.

So that's it from me this month. I hope everyone gets a chance to try this challenge. The sketch itself is very easy and a great design to showcase those beautiful pattern papers. Hope to see all your great ideas on the wall!

ATC Camp

We had our second Artist Trading Card Camp at NESC on Saturday, March 27th. What's an Artist Trading Card (some of you might ask)? ATC's are self-produced miniature works of art created on 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" pieces of cardstock, paper, etc. The concept is a person-to-person trade. The group met once in February and just had their second "meet-up" this past Saturday. Not only did we have a great time, but we are really starting to find our groove.

The theme that was chosen from last month was "Spring." Christy designed an ATC card for us to make as a group. Along with the card, we each made a little box to store our cards that we collect. Each individual also designed a card in advance of class and took the class time to finish up their cards, which we then traded. Below are some photos of the group hard at work, and then a photo of our finished product. We've decided to go with an alphabetical format going forward . . . starting with A (and our theme is animals).

We are so looking forward to next month! If you're interested in joining in on the fun, we may be starting up another group if there is interest. Stop in and let us know!

The March Challenge is here!

Before I even move to the March challenge, let me first say how impressed we are with each and every submission that came through for the February challenge. The unique and different ways that our crafty customers made a zig zag border with ribbon was just awesome. I am the one challenging you, and yet we all get to see some great ideas each month. We are definitely inspiring each other!

So on to March we go! I found this one page layout in a magazine which was my inspiration to get me started on my sketch. So here is the sketch . . .

Here is my layout, and the requirements follow along with some explanation and clarification.

1) First, how often to we put our titles on the left page of our two page layouts! Let's break the cycle by putting a block title on the right side of the right page. You can do anything you want . . . print it on the computer, use stickers, die cuts, or an embellishment that serves as your title. It can be any size you'd like too. Be creative . . . just put a title block on the right side of your right page.

2) How often do we buy paper and embellishments to match? Use a pattern paper that has accompanying embellishments. For the sample that you see below, I used TPC Undersea Adventure paper and the embellishments that matched. There were a number of embellishments that went with that particular line, and I chose some acrylic bubbles and ribbon. Nothing like a little matchy-matchy!

3) Include a journal block that is embellished with ribbon. I've got mine tied around my block, but you can use the ribbon on your journal block in any way that you'd like. Staple it! Adhere it with a brad! Punch a hole and tie it through. Whatever works.

4) Frame one of your photos with rick rack . . . any photo . . . any color. I framed my top left picture, only because it is the coolest picture ever . . . fingers formed to make a star. Starfish paper . . . oh . . . matchy-matchy.

5) Finally, use some jewels to accent some items on your page. I used some to accent my rick rack. I used some to accent my title. I used some to accent the bubble paper. I went a little crazy.

I have such confidence in all of you. Biggest question I have is how many of you will have your kids forming stars with their fingers for a photo opportunity down the road. I know how the scrapbooking mom's mind works.

Most important . . . no stress. Be creative. Have fun! Can't wait for you all to inspire us.

Busy, Busy Designers

We had our employee crop tonight, and there were many projects in the works. Peg was busy working on her pages for the next Kid's Class. They are done and in the class book on display. Stop in and check them out, and clear your calendar for April 21st (vacation week).

Chris was working on some pages for an upcoming class using alcohol inks. She has a couple of techniques to share with anyone who would like to learn. The samples for her class are in the book as well. Stop in the store for dates and to see these great layouts.

Debbie was working on the March challenge which comes out tomorrow. Her original inspiration came from a recent magazine and she suddenly had the sketch in her head and was ready to go. We can't wait for everyone to see the sketch and create some fabulous layouts, as we've been so inspired by all of our entries.

Now to put a plug in for a great product line, and this one comes by very honestly. While Debbie was busy being creative working on her challenge layout using some beach paper that is a few weeks old, she looked to her left and noticed Vanessa working on a great layout using the same product line. Great minds think alike. A few minutes later, Debbie looks to her right and notices Chris working on her class pages . . . same product line. If that isn't an endorsement for a really great paper line! Come and check out the TPC Undersea Adventure, before the best selection of papers and embellishments is gone. It is absolutely fun and fabulous. Vanessa was working on some pages where she used little embellishments on springs. Chris was using the product for her class page. Debbie was using them for her March challenge, due out . . . hmmmm . . . today (it's after midnight). It was a triple dose of beachy keen!

Project Idea Of The Week

Last Monday during our "Reminisnce Launch Party," we discussed that products can be used for more than just scrapbooking. Take for example Reminisce's large sticker sheets. They have these cute little critters, but let's face it...they are HUGE! Do you really want a 6" high sticker on your layout? Our solution: "Think Outside The Book." Try using products in different ways. Here's an example of what we created using a large Reminisce bunny sticker:

We added a darling bow tie to his collar area, affixed him to a posicle stick and added him to a basket made from Reminsice glitter and patterend papers. Super cute!

February Challenge Time!

It is that time again . . . monthly challenge time. Are you ready?

If you're been following our blog, you know that our first challenge just ended. We absolutely loved seeing the creativity. I loved the use of the felt lace in our winning layout by Helene. I was inspired seeing two entries that used the same pattern paper (Eileen and Julie) and how very different their layouts were. Cynthia's culinary page left me inspired to do a page with a story and include photos of some of the "things" in my life. We tend to forget that there are things in our lives that are important and have a place in our scrapbooks. And I loved Debbie's scallop border which really added a new dimension to the sketch!

What everyone seems to like best about the challenge is the opportunity to finish a page using your photos and your own theme. You create a page that fits your needs and you get a page done. And so here we are again . . .

- Follow the sketch (although feel free to flip it or swap the pages if you'd like).

- Put your name on the back of both pages of your layout, and bring it down to New England Scrapbook Company for submission to the challenge.

- Deadline for submission of layouts is the 1st of the upcoming month (so our challenge announced today has a deadline of March 1st.

- All participants will receive a coupon for a future purchase.

- Customers will vote on layouts from the 2nd to the 11th of each month and one lucky winner will get a prize (winner to be announced on the 12th).

Layouts will be available for pick-up by their creators beginning on the 13th.

This month's sketch is a great sketch for large background patterned papers that you love, but don't want to break apart because they would lose so much. You can put a large paper down and then shift your focal photo so that much of the design is showing through (as I did in my sample). So the challenge is . . .

1 - Include a focal photo that is at least 5 x 7" (larger if you would like).

2 - Use photo corners of any kind, shape . . . even if you decide to just use squares to enhance your mats. A corner is a corner (is a corner).

3 - Include a jagged ribbon border anywhere on your page.

4 - Add a little bling . . . it can be jewels, paper with sparkle, Stickles . . . whatever you'd like. Just include a little bling.

5 - Use your own handwriting instead of the printed words from computer fonts. It's so important to incorporate our handwriting into our scrapbooks.

Again, feel free to make the page your own. Use a larger photo if you'd like. Include more than one jagged ribbon border. Or use more than just a little bling . . . or so much bling that you need sun glasses as you near completion of your layout.

And that's the assignment. Now, here is the sketch . . .

The layout below is just one idea using the sketch and the assignment and includes all of the five . . . I used a 5 x 7" photo of two of my favorite girls (my daughter and my dog), I included punched corners on my focal photo only; my bling is in the form of jewels that I later found matched my dog's eyes; I've got my jagged ribbon border, and as difficult as it was for me, I managed to journal in my very own handwriting across my page (I know it's important . . . but ick).

Have fun creating a layout for your scrapbook that appeals to you and inspires us!

"The Adventures of Bunda at the Cut & Paste"

Who is Bunda? And what is the 'Cut & Paste?"

Vanessa's daughter Katherine was here with her mama visiting the store on Friday morning. She bought her "lovie" (named Bunda) with her. Unfortunately, Katherine left Bunda behind. And so began his adventure...

But what is the "Cut & Paste?" The "Cut & Paste" is the name Vanessa's daugthers have given NESC. Cute right? Ok...back to our story.

So, Bunda is left stranded here all day Friday. Christy arrives at the store & takes care of Bunda.

She feeds him Carrot Soup. She watches over him until Vanessa comes to rescue him.

Vanessa arrives at the store. She knows she must take Bunda home. BUT...she forgets to snatch him up. And so he is stranded here for the night!

Today, Bunda had quite the adventure! He went on a store field trip;

He visited the Disney Princesses.

He played Hide & Seek in a scrap bag.

He thought about taking a road trip.

And finally he picked out paper to make a layout.

So...Auntie Debbie & Bunda sat down together to create his very 1st layout.

Here he is hard at work.

And here is the finished layout. He did a 4" x 4" layout with Crate Paper. Darling!

But before long Katherine was here to pick up her Bunda...and we are happy to report that he is back home, safe & sound. And he has a gorgeous layout to chronical his adventures! Thanks Bunda for coming to play with us at the "Cut & Paste!"

Wow! January is officially over...and we are in full gear at the store, getting ready to bring you a full schedule for February. Here's what's on tap:

Monday, February 1st is the official registration for the April 18th Bus Tour. (NESC has sold out but there are still seats available at the other 3 stores.)

Also on Monday, February 1st we start the voting for the NESC Monthly Blog Challenge. We have 5 ladies who have submitted their version of the Blog Challenge...and boy are they amazing! Come in between now and February 13th to vote for your favorite. The winner will receive a scrapbooking prize pack. Our next challenge starts February 15th. Watch for details!

Our full February calendar is up on our web. Stop by our website to see what your favorite instructors are bringing you this month. And look for a special "February Class Update" email coming later this week.

We are starting a new club this month for all of you ATC lovers. We call it "ATC Camp" and it will be held on the 4th Saturday of each month. (This month's date is Saturday, February 27th 10:00 - 12:00.) We are kicking off the "Camp" with guest instructor Pam Huntington. She will help you create a beautiful ATC and you'll learn all about the new club. Cost is only $5 per month, but we can only take a set number students, so if this something you might like to learn about, sign up soon! Learn all about ATC's, how they were started, why the are in such high demand and how you can start your own collection! This is one you won't want to miss!

Our "Fiskateer Friday" Crop with Kelly Jo is sold out for Friday, February 12th, but we have started a waiting list for those of you still interested. We will be inviting her back in the spring for another fun-filled crop event, so watch for coming details.

You said you missed our ever popular "Mommy & Me" kids classes...so we brought them back! Join us this Sunday, January 31st from 1:00 - 3:30 for a kids class like no other. Let your kids get a jump start on their own albums, or, add to the ones they are currently working on. Ages 8 and under mom can stay and help their little ones cute and paste while older kids can be dropped off and mom can grab a coffee and scone at Panera. Or, mom can bring her own supplies and crop the afternoon away while the kid creates. Sound like fun? Call for details or to sign up!

Blog Challenge Update

The buzz is that many of you are eager to complete your own version of the NESC Blog Challenge...

how exciting!!! We've asked our Design Team to create pages of their own using the sketch we

posted last week. Here's what they have done so far:

Susan used papers from the new Graphic 45 line "Domestic Goddess."

Christy created a baby layout using "Lil' Sprout" from Fancy Pants.

Vanessa created this page for her girls using papers from American Crafts.

Chris Z. used papers from her stash and used her punches to create flower embellishments.

Peg Bruno used papers from her stash as well and then created her own title using her dies.

Wow...these layouts are great! Our girls sure are talented! And we can't wait to see what our customers come up with! If you want to join in on the fun, keeping reading the blog to find the Jan 15th post. It outlines all of the details. Your layouts must be in the store no later than Feb 1st. Billy, our super cute UPS driver has been here everyday with new products...and we can't wait to share them with you!

First up are the new collections from Creative Imaginations:

Such beautiful colors for this line.

This new "Theatre" line is so rich in color.

"Expecting" from Creative Imaginations is perfect for anyone having their 1st baby!

And finally from Creative Imaginations we have new "Cat" & "Dog" papers and stickers.

So different than the usual "brown & tan" we usually see.

Reminisce released their new "Love" collection, which is perefct for Valentines, wedding, or just the special loved one in your life.

This picture doesn't do this line justice. The deep reds and golds really make this line stand out. CI incorporated beautiful glitter in their paper and stickers. Come in to see the sample page we made.

And for all of you Disney fans, we have the new Sandylion papers from Clubhouse Mickey and Toy Story (the new Toy Story movie debuts this summer...hurry in to get your suppiles now!)

The Page Challenge is Here!

Are you ready? It's here. It's the New England Scrapbook Company Monthly Page Challenge. Here are the details:

A new challenge will be announced on the 15th of the each month.
The challenge will include a sketch, and a list of items to include in your sketch.
You can do whatever you want with your layout, you just need to follow the sketch and include the specified items.
Put your name on the back of both pages of your layout, and bring it down to New England Scrapbook Company for submission to the challenge.
Deadline for submission of layouts is the 1st of the upcoming month (so our challenge announced today has a deadline of February 1st.
All participants will receive a coupon for a future purchase.
Our customers will vote on layouts from the 2nd to the 11th of each month, customers can come in and vote for their favorite, and we will have one winner each month who will get a prize.
Winner will be announced on the 12th of each month.
Layouts will be available for pick-up by their creators beginning on the 13th.

Anyone who participates in this first challenge will also receive a free photo cloth when they drop off their layout.

Remember, each month will be a different sketch; different list of items to include in your layout.

Challenge of the Month - January 2010

This month's challenge is a tribute to our crop room, which just received some cosmetic changes thanks to the hard work of some of our NESC family members . . . (fade in a little "We Are Family" . . . can you hear it). Seriously, the crop room looks great. You have to stop down and see it in new hues of blue and brown. In honor of those new hues, we've come up with the following:

Create a two page layout using the sketch below. The challenge is to include:

Brown background (any shade or pattern of brown from tan to java)
Cardstock that is blue (any shade)
Ribbons that are brown and/or blue (or both)
Accents of American Crafts brads, buttons, eyelets, arrows, etc.
A flower of any kind (die cut, sticker, fabric, whatever you have)

Those are the minimums that must be included. Yes - you can use other colors too. Yes, in addition to six inches of blue and brown ribbon you can use a whole yard of pink. Yes you can use other colors of cardstock or pattern paper. Yes you can use other embellishments in addition to the American Crafts buttons or brads. You just need to make sure that your layout includes those five bulleted items above. That's the assignment.

Now, here is the sketch . . .

The layout below is just one idea using the sketch and the assignment and includes all of the five. Brown background (we used cardstock), blue (aqua) Bazzill dot cardstock, blue and brown ribbon, American Crafts brads (large red for flower, and brown pearl for accent), yellow die cut flowers (Sizzix). Now you can create a layout that appeals to you and inspires us!

Remember, February 1st is the due date for layouts if you'd like to join in on the fun.

What a great quote. It includes some very positive words, and one of our favorite words . . . "creativity." We have a few questions to pose to everyone who reads this blog.

First, how many times have you gone through a creative slump where you really just wanted someone to tell you what to do?

Second, how many times have you flipped through a magazine, seen a sketch of a design, and then seen several different layouts using that sketch and wished you could show off your creation?

Third, can you remember a time when you were a child and you looked forward to homework? The teacher came out with a brand new assignment, and you were so excited by it that you couldn't wait to get started?

If any of those sound remotely appealing to you, then have we got a challenge for you! It's the New England Scrapbook Company Monthly Page Challenge. It's an assignment, with a sketch! Or is it a sketch, with an assignment. Well, either way it's going to be fun! Each month we will post a sketch with a specific assignment. It might be a theme, a particular type of product, a journaling assignment . . . it will be a surprise assignment each and every month. You complete your page within the guidelines given and we'll display your layout temporarily in the store. Those participating will get a coupon toward a future purchase, and one creative participant will receive a prize after customer vote. Details will be announced with our first challenge, which will be this coming Friday . . . so stay tuned!

Creativity breeds more creativity! We'll do our sketch, show an example, and then if ten of you follow through on the assignment, we will all get to see some great examples of creativity. We'll learn from each other. We'll spark our creativity together.

We cannot wait to be inspired by all of you!

A New Year...A New Look!

Big changes are coming to the NESC Crop Room! We've picked out the paint & we've started cleaning out the old.

We will be busy this weekend sprucing up the joint with new colors, new layouts and new inspiration! We're planning space for a new feature that we will be announcing in the coming days. So, if you see us with paint in our hair, just smile & offer to take our picture. Trust me...it's gonna be GREAT!
